ARMY OF ANYONE Frontman Says Writing Music Was 'Effortless'
November 16, 2006Former FILTER frontman Richard Patrick told AOL Music that the musical rapport between him and his current ARMY OF ANYONE bandmates, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS brothers-in-arms Robert and Dean DeLeo, well as drummer Ray Luzier, was there instantly. "We'd bumped into each other on the road, [and] there was a mutual respect," he said. "But we got together 'cause it was, like, 'Listen, there's some great music that needs to be written. Let's do it."
"For whatever reason, it was effortless," he continued. "Robert's driving to my house for this writing session, and he starts playing a bunch of minor-key stuff. Next thing you know, he had just written a song in 15 seconds. We thought, 'If it's that easy to make music, and it's that much fun...'"
Patrick said the band's lead single, "Goodbye", came about just as easily. "I looked at Robert one day and I was like, 'Hey, we need something up-tempo. We've got a whole record of mid-tempo stuff.' And Robert's like, 'Here. What do you think of that?' Next thing you know, they whipped together a chorus, and it was done," he said. "I want it to be effortless and fluid and visceral. That's why I'm in this band."
